Curly Girl Profile: Hannah Hendler

Name: Hannah Hendler
Age: 20
Occupation: Classical Late Civilization & History Double Major at NYU

What do you like about your hair?
Even if I don’t always like the way it dries, I love what it can do.

Have you ever tried to conceal your curls?
When I was younger I was always curly, I first straightened my hair in 6th grade.  It’s been an ongoing battle ever since.  As I’ve gotten older I’ve let it go natural more.  If I’m feeling free spirited, I’ll leave my hair curly.  It differs with my look.

So which side is winning?
I would say it’s in the middle. My hair is in a bit of a wave right now.  I ombre-ed it at home so the ends are a little bit dry right now.

So you did this at home?
Yeah, well my friend was going to help me but I just got the urge to do it myself. I like, Googled it.  I went to CVS and got a hair lightening kit with bleach.  I also bought a box of dark brown in case things went horribly wrong though.

It’s good to have insurance in situations involving bleach.
Haha yes. I like it, but I’ve yet to see it straight though.

So this is a really recent thing?
Oh yeah, I did it like two days ago.  I might add a few highlights, but my hair is kind of damaged at the moment so I got a deep conditioning treatment.  Right now I’m just letting it breathe.

Hee-hoo. (That’s me imitating her hair doing a deep breath.) Do you do a lot of conditioning?
Oh yeah, I always have to condition my hair.  I use the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi stuff, it has an amazing smell.

Do you have a specific regimen?
I really don’t use a lot of styling products outside of conditioner.  I use heat protectant when I’m about to use those crazy heat contraptions.  What I love about my hair is that it holds styles really well.  I can curl it or I can wear it straight without it falling.

So you can rock the Taylor Swift curls.
Haha you know, I did that in high school, I went for those tight curls.

Yeah, I think that’s the only time those are appropriate.
Yeah, definitely.

(Hannah’s adorable watch!)

What’s your miracle product?
I’ll use hairspray sometimes.  I have a couple creams, but they’re not that great.  The Garnier Fructis they have in Spain was amazing.  They must have a different formula or something but that was the magical product.

How long does it take to straighten your hair?
15-20 minutes?

So what’s the verdict, do curly girls have more fun?
Yes, I’m happy I don’t have just straight hair because it’s kinda boring.  Your hair is so much more interesting [when it’s curly]. When I have my hair curly, I feel really like, free.  I think it makes me more opinionated and individualistic.
